Your objective in the game is to ski down a hill with the help of some Penguins, Falcons and a Yeti, all while trying not to be attacked by a avalanche. And there are a lot f achievements and unlockables that will keep playing again and again.

The Polaroid M10 and M7

The Polaroid M7 has the same High Res Screen as the M10. It features a Dual Core Processor, a MicroSD Card Slot, 8GB of Storage, Android 4.1 and a 2 Megapixel Front-Facing Camera (Unfortunately there is no Rear-Facing Camera just like the Nexus 7).

A Few days ago Google & Asus announced the Asus Qube, a Google TV Set-Top Box. The Qube is what most Tech Reviewers are saying that this is what the Nexus Q should have been. Asus has just announced that the Qube will be sold for $150 and it will be released in Q1 2013.

This is what the Qube looks like

CES 2013: Official Day 1

Sony has unveiled some new products today at their press conference including the Sony Xperia Z. The new Sony Xperia Z combines current superphone staples like a 5-inch, 1080p screen and quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with high-end imagining and the ability to survive underwater without missing a beat.

Huawei has just announced the Ascend Mate with a Massive Screen at 6.1 inches, the Mate (coming to China in February and other markets thereafter) makes the iPhone 5 look like a Tic-Tac. It also has a much bigger 720p screen than the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II, although Huawei says it has a more compact screen-to-chassis ratio than competing phones.

Lexus and its parent company Toyota are jumping into the self-driving car race. The company announced at CES 2013 that it’s working on what it calls its Advanced Active Safety Research Vehicle, which will serve as a launch pad for future autonomous vehicles.

Here is the Lexus Autonomous Vehicle Concept
Software Company Canonical made waves recently with the announcement that Ubuntu, the popular open-source operating system, was making the leap to smartphones. But does the world need another mobile operating system? The folks at Canonical seem to think so. And after going hands-on with the latest build of Ubuntu Mobile during Pepcom at CES 2013.

Samsung’s new television sets for 2013 are not only beautiful, but allow for more connectivity and interaction with the devices than ever before. Samsung Smart TV provides more interaction with content and partners than any other TVs. The new Samsung flagship F8000 television is a sight to behold, with its LED screen and incredibly beautiful picture. The OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) TVs with built-in speaker systems look like a work of art. If Apple is going to make its own television, it has its work cut out.

CES 2013: "UnOfficial" Day 1 (CES Unveiled 2013)

*Please Note that January 7th 2013 was Pre-CES 2013 and not an official Day at CES

There were so many things to choose to talk about in this post for the very first “unofficial” day of CES 2013 but sadly I’m not actually at the Show so I can tell you my hands on impressions but however I can explain to you some of the things that were announced today starting with.

Nvidia Tegra 4: It combines 4 A15 CPU Cores and about 72 GPU Cores and has a integrated 4G LTE Modem, which makes the Tegra 4, the Fastest Mobile Processor so far.Next we have the unexpected, Nvidia Project Shield, where on first glance you might thing that its a modified Xbox 360 Controller with a touch screen. However, it is actually a portable gaming device that combines a 5 inch touch screen, the new Tegra 4 Processor and running on Stock Android. This device, can stream games from your PC to your Device and then you could output to a HDTV via the device’s HDMI port. The device also has a MicroSD Card Slot and can all the regular games from the Google Play Store just like any latest Android Smartphone.

Lenovo 27 inch IdeaCentre Horizon, combines the best of a All-In-One, a Laptop and a Tablet to create a “Table Top Computer”. With this computer, it combines great Hardware and Software. And plenty of games could be played in the Table Top position like “Air Hockey”.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix Hybrid: It is a new Laptop/Tablet Hybrid that can serve as a 11.6 inch Tablet and a Powerful Business Ultrabook with the detachable Keyboard dock. That about does cover just some of the stuff announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

LG showed its new OLED TVs with WRGB techology, wide viewing angles, infinite contrast ratio, realistic colours etc.  LG also put forth a 100-inch Mega Smart TV, which isn’t just a prototype or for demo, but will be available for purchase. The company’s new line-up of 4K TVs will be Smarter with 2.2 channel sound and Cinema 3D; the company is working with industry partners like Activision, Google and Disney to produce more 4K content. The Search feature has been made intuitive for recommendations based on your history of viewing and search habits and the new LG magic remote has been designed to understand “natural” language so you can speak comfortably and not like a robot with the voice control on the remote and not TV. LG is also showcasing Google TVs and 3D TVs. Moreover, LG plans to go 100 percent LED and no more CCFL.

Vizio unveiled two Android tablets.  The first is a 10 inch tablet powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 4 processor, which means it’s faster than the latest version of Apple’s iPad and will be running Android 4.2 (a.k.a. Jelly Bean).  It also features 32GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi, front and rear cameras, and a standard set or ports connectivity.  The second is a 7-inch tablet that features a Tegra 3 processor, a 1280 x 800 IPS display, 16GB of storage, a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, and stock Android Jelly Bean.

It’s (NOT) the End of the World as We Know It

If you are reading this right now, then you probably are on of the people that knew the world wasn’t going to end just yet. So today is 12.21.2012, otherwise know as Dooms Day 2012 but nothing has happened and nothing bad is going to happen to the world today.

In other news, the music video for the K-Pop Star Psy’s “Gangnam Style” has become the very first YouTube video to hit 1 Billion (Yes, the one with nine zeros) It only took 160 days – give or take a few hours which that works out to 6.25 million views a day, 260,416 an hour, 4,340 a minute and 72 a second. Congratulations to Psy and let’s see if his video can make it to 2 Billion.

And for your listening pleasures, here is R.EM.’s “It’s the end of the World as we know it (and I Feel Fine) “

Apple Gift Card RANT

Finally the best time of the year is officially here, The Holiday Season. For many people, it can be a pain to decide what to get your friends or family. So most people would go for the traditional gift card to give to someone as a gift.

However if your recipient is heavily part of the Apple Ecosystem, where they only buy products from Apple, buy media from Apple iTunes, they already have a iPhone, iPad or another iOS device that can access the Apple App Store. Your first instinct would be to buy them a iTunes Gift Card, but they will realize that they can’t buy apps for their iPhone with the iTunes Gift Card you got them. So then they wished you had got them a App Store Gift Card instead of a iTunes Card.

Apple could have avoided this mess if they had created a system where you can buy just one type of card, maybe call it the “Apple Card” and with that Apple Card, you could buy stuff from the App Store, iTunes Store or iBooks Store without having to buy separate gift card. This system would have shown less confusion and frustration to people who have a Gift Card (either App, iTunes or iBooks Store). This idea of a “Apple Card” would have gone with Apple’s simplicity idea to everything. However Apple has not realized this idea that i have clearly laid out. And that is the conclusion to my first rant on TheCanadianTechie. I hope you have enjoyed it.

Android 4.2 Jellybean Review

After using Android 4.2 for about two weeks now, I would have to say it is a nice incremental update over Android 4.1 (also called Jellybean). Now here is my review of the latest version of Android.

Android 4.2 brings some new features such as:

  • Photosphere (& a redesigned camera interface)
  • Lockscreen Widgets
  • Google Now Improvements
  • Gesture Typing
  • Daydream (& Other Minor Details)

Gesture Typing in 4.2 works in the similarly to Swype and SwiftKey, where a user would drag there finger to each letter to create a word. Now that has been implemented into stock Android. It works really well, and it predicted words as accurately as possible including ones added to your Personal Dictionary. It is a nice feature to have instead of typing like normally or using speech to text. Overall this feature was feature was implemented very well.

Photosphere & New Camera Interface, In Android 4.2, the camera interface gets a redesigned look from recent versions of Android but still keeps the swipe to left to get straight to the gallery, that was introduced in 4.1. What is also new is the ability to take a Photosphere, which allows you to create a 360° view of where you take it, as if you are standing there. When a photosphere is viewed, it looks similarly to a Google StreetView.

You start off by selecting a area and then you can choose to move the device’s camera up, down, left or right to start stitching together your Photosphere. One tip I learned from MKBHD (on YouTube) is when creating a photosphere, is to not move yourself when creating it, but instead just move your device in your hands, that way you won’t have awkward pictures of objects or people in you Photosphere. Another thing to notice is that you can now take Panorama photos in Portrait unlike before where you could only take it in Landscape.

Google Now Improvements, Google Now can get information from Gmail to get ideas for new cards. It can help you track packages, find movie information and it can also help you find great spots for photo-ops which is based on your location.

Lockscreen Widgets, if you ever wanted to have widgets like Gmail, Messaging, a Clock Widget in the lockscreen now in 4.2, you have that feature available to you. So far with the update you can add in a Gmail, Calendar, Messaging and a standard Clock widget. There aren’t really any other widgets you can add at the moment, as this update is fairly new. So third party lockscreen widgets are suppose to come in the coming weeks as widgets are update to support the feature.

Minor Features, some other features included in the latest update include Daydream, where you can set your phone to have a “screensaver”, and you can choose from various options like photo albums or news from Google Currents, and the flinging of “Jellybeans with happy faces on them.

Miracast Wireless display support, which means you can stream videos, movies, TV Shows and YouTube videos and anything else from your device to your HDTV if you have a wireless display adapter or the Miracast technology built-in.

PROS
+ Redesigned Camera Interface
+ Gesture Typing and well integrated
+ Google Now is improved that from 4.1

CONS
– Lockscreen Widgets Could use some more work
– The “Daydream” Feature feels unnecessary

Stay Tuned, a Video on the features of Android 4.2 Jellybean should be up on my YouTube Channel in the next couple of days.

Each member can set up different user accounts and switch between them on the lockscreen, and each user will have their own home screens and widgets to customize their way. The Nexus 10 costs $400 for the 16GB and $500 for the 32GB model (add $10 to each one for Canadian Price). It will be available in the Google Play store in Canada, U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Japan on November 11th.

Google also announced a version of the Nexus 7 with 32GB of storage and Mobile Data (more specifically HSPA+) and it is unlocked. It will cost $300 ($309 in Canada) and will available on the Google Play Store on November 13th in the following countries, Canada, U.S, U.K, Australia, France, Germany and Spain. Google has discontinued the 8GB Nexus 7 and now the 16GB Nexus 7 starts at $200 ($209 in Canada) and 32GB for $250 ($259 in Canada).

Now onto the New features in Android 4.2. The first new feature is Gesture Typing, essentially what it is, a new keyboard feature that will allow users to swipe between keys on the keyboard and it is similair to Swype or SwiftKey.
Another feature that i mentioned early for Tablet users, is multi-user support, where your tablet will be able to support multiple logins, each user can have their own personal homescreen, background, widgets, apps and games. A cool feature of multi-user support on Android 4.2 is that it also separates game-save progress and high scores separate, the update will also use multi-tasking to keep programs running in the background to make swapping users super fast.

Another feature of the new Android update is Miracast Wireless display support, which means you can stream videos, movies, TV Shows and YouTube videos and anything else from your device to your HDTV if you have a wireless display adapter or the Miracast technology built-in.

The third new feature is Photo Sphere camera, which basically means you can take spherical photos. The fourth feature is “Daydream”, which is a screensaver type of feature that will allow your device to show off useful information when idle or docked. It can show things like photo albums or news from Google Currents and more. Another feature is Actionable Notifications that allow you to access appropriate actions directly from the notifications menu. And lastly in 4.2, are some “Google Now” improvements, where Google Now can get information from Gmail to get ideas for new cards. It can help you track packages, find movie information and it can also help you find great spots for photo-ops which is based on your location.
