TCL has announced 2021 lineup of Android-powered TVs with the new 5-Series and 6-Series with Google TV.
Google TV was first introduced last year with the new Chromecast. Think of it has a skin on top of Android TV, the Google TV interface is much more content-focused and aimed to find stuff to watch with ease.
“With the explosive growth of smart TV and streaming service adoption, TCL is excited to expand our awardwinning portfolio with Google TV models in the North American market. Leveraging our vertical integration, massive business scale and innovation advancement to deliver bestinclass products, TCL is further accelerating its industry leadership position with strategic partners like Google at a time when content navigation and discovery are so important,” said Chris Larson, Senior Vice President for TCL North America.
“Once again, TCL is America’s secondlargest TV brand and I believe that is due to the team’s steadfast dedication to our users and what they value in a premium yet simple entertainment experience. Pairing our highperformance hardware with the contentforward, consumer friendly Google TV was an easy decision for us as we both put the user’s needs first. From their robust library to having handsfree voice assistance and smart home control, Google’s intuitive entertainment platform is the perfect complement to our TCL sets.”
TCL has confirmed that these new Google TV models won’t be replacing their Roku TVs but instead compliment their lineup, while also offering some consumer choice.
TCL 6-Series with Google TV (2021)

The 6-Series (R646) with Google TV is very similar specs-wise to the Roku version launch last year. It has 4K resolution powered by mini-LED backlight (with up to 240 Contrast Control Zones) for improved colour and contrast.

There’s also QLED technology, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos support and THX Certified Game Mode. It also has Wi-Fi 6 support, along with Ethernet.

Since the TV is powered by Google TV, there’s hands-free “Hey, Google” voice control support without using the remote. There are far-field mics built-in the TV itself which can be disabled like other Google Assistant speakers.
For ports, there are four HDMI ports with two of which support HDMI 2.1 up to 4K/120Hz, one eARC port and two USB ports.
The included remote has a built-in mic for voice control and quick access to Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and TCL Channels.
An optional 1080p webcam that attaches to the top of the TV will be sold separately for $79 USD and can be used for video calls on Google Duo and other video conference apps.
The TCL 6-Series with Google TV comes in 55-, 65- and 75-inch screen sizes. The new TVs will be launching in the next few weeks, with Canadian pricing announced closer to launch.

There’s still QLED technology, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos support and THX Certified Game Mode. It also has Wi-Fi 5 support, along with Ethernet.
For ports, there’s only three HDMI (one being eARC) along with one USB 2.0 port.

Is the CAD pricing correct for the R646? Would it not be much more expensive in Canadian dollars?
