Asus has announced its latest gaming phones with the ROG Phone 5 series.
Despite having a 5 in the name, this is the fourth iteration in the ROG Phone series. If you’re asking why Asus skipped calling it the ROG Phone 4, that’s because, in some East Asian cultures, the number 4 is considered unlucky because it sounds like the word for death.

This year, Asus is changing things up a bit. There are now three phones in the ROG Phone lineup with the ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate.
“The ROG Phone 5 series is the ultimate gaming smartphone for the best mobile gaming experience,” said ASUS co‐CEO, S.Y. Hsu. “It continues the legacy of ROG Phones as the leading gaming smartphones with exceptional performance, displays, audio, control and battery life.”
All three variants have a 6.78-inch AMOLED display (made by Samsung) with a resolution of 2448 x 1080 and 144Hz refresh rate and 300Hz touch sampling rate. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and has HDR10 and HDR10+ support.

The ROG Phone 5 series’ display is capable of 800 nits of outdoor-readable brightness and 1,200 nits of peak brightness.
In addition to the main display, the ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate have a rear matrix display called ROG Vision. The display can show customizable animations.
The ROG Phone 5 Pro has a colour ROG Vision display while the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate has a monochrome version.
Just like past ROG Phones, the latest have two USB-C ports and the headphone jack has made a return, after being removed from the ROG Phone 3.
Powering the ROG Phone 5 series is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. The ROG Phone 5 and 5 Pro have up to 16GB of RAM and while the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate offers up to 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM.
For storage, the ROG Phone 5 has up to 256GB while the ROG Phone 5 and 5 Ultimate have up to 512GB.
Battery life should be fairly long, thanks to the 6000 mAh battery with fast 65W HyperCharge fast wired charging and Quick Charge 4.0+ support.
The phones have an in-display fingerprint sensor and Ultrasonic sensors for the AirTrigger 5. There’s WiFi 6E support, Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi Direct and NFC.
For cameras, the ROG Phone 5 series has three of them on the back with a 64MP main lens, 13MP Ultrawide and 5MP macro along with a 24MP front-facing camera.

On the software side, the ROG Phone 5 is running Android 11 with their ROG UI.
In addition to the phones, the ROG Phone 5 lineup has a number of accessories including the ROG Kunai 3 Gamepad, ROG Lighting Armor Case and more.
The ROG Phone 5 comes in Phantom Black and Storm White. The ROG Phone 5 Pro comes in Phantom Black while the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate is offered in Storm White.

The ROG Phone 5 series is launching in North America in Q2 2021 but Canadian pricing hasn’t been announced.
