Following a number of leaks, Apple’s first over-ear noise-cancelling headphones are here with the AirPods Max.
The AirPods Max has a custom acoustic design using a breathable knit mesh canopy and a stainless steel headband frame.

“AirPods are the most popular headphones in the world, beloved for their effortless setup, incredible sound quality, and iconic design. With AirPods Max, we are bringing that magical AirPods experience to a stunning over-ear design with high-fidelity audio,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The custom acoustic design, combined with powerful H1 chips, and advanced software enable AirPods Max to use computational audio to wirelessly deliver the ultimate personal listening experience.”
The headphones have 40mm, dynamic drivers, to provide a “rich, deep bass, accurate mid-ranges and crip high-frequency.” Appl’s H1 chip is in each ear cup to power computational audio features like Adaptive EQ, Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode and spatial audio.
The earcups have a similar mesh design to that of the HomePod. Each ear cushion has memory foam to “create an effective seal”. On top of the right earcup is the Digital Crown to control volume, media playback controls and activating Siri.
Next to the Digital Crown is the noise control button to cycle through, ANC and Transparency mode.

The battery life for the AirPods Max is around 20 hours with ANC on. The headphones charge over Lightning and you can get 90 mins of listening time in a five-minute charge.
If you prefer to use the AirPods Max in wired mode, you’ll need to purchase their Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable, sold separately for $45 CAD and comes in black or white.
The headphones come with a Smart Case that puts them in an ultralow-power state to preserve the battery when not in use.

Some additional features of the AirPods Max include automatic switching between iPhone, iPad, and Mac, audio sharing between two sets of AirPods on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV 4K.
The headphones are available in space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink colour options.
The AirPods Max will be launching on December 15th in Canada, the US and 25 more markets. Pre-orders begin today from Apple’s website for $779 CAD ($549 USD).
You’ll need Apple devices running iOS 14.3 or later, iPadOS 14.3 or later, macOS Big Sur 11.1 or later, watchOS 7.2 or later, or tvOS 14.3 or later.
