Taika Waititi to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film

After a few rumours, Disney and Lucasfilm have officially announced that Taika Waititi is set to co-write and direct a new Star Wars film.

Waititi who recently won an Oscar for his Jojo Rabbit screenplay will be joined by Oscar nominee, Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho) to write the screenplay for the upcoming film.

Waititi also appeared in The Mandalorian as IG-11 and directed the season one finale.

Disney also announced that Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Sleeping with Other People, Bachelorette) is working on her own Star Wars series for Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series.

Headland’s upcoming series is just one of many Star Wars projects at Disney+ including Season Two of The Mandalorian, which is currently in post-production), a Cassian Andor series and an Obi-Wan series.

A release date for Waititi’s Star Wars film and Headland’s upcoming show have not been announced.
