According to an exclusive report by Variety, a third season of The Mandalorian is in the works.
Sources close to the production told Variety that series creator, writer and producer Jon Favreau has been “writing season 3 for a while.”
“We’ve just started pre-production and are looking into further adventures for the Mandalorian in Season 3,” revealed one source to Variety.
The art department at Lucasfilm for the show has been working on concepts for Season 3 for the past few weeks, led by vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang.
Another source told Variety that the production design department has started work on Mandalorian season 3 as of April 20th and the department needs a “huge lead time.”
Filming for Season 2 of The Mandalorian wrapped in early March, just before coronavirus shutdowns were put in place.
Disney+ has recently surpassed 50 million paid subscribers with some of that success due to The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian is just one of a few live-action Star Wars series that Disney has in the works for Disney+. An Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Ewan McGregor and a Cassian Andor/K-2SO series are currently in the works with no release dates/windows announced.
While Season 2 of The Mandalorian isn’t set to premiere until October 2020, an eight-part docu-series called Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian is set to debut on Disney+ on Monday, May 4th.
Disney has yet to officially announce Season 3 of The Mandalorian with it most likely premiering in 2021 or 2022.
