Apple brings back the iPhone SE for 2020 [Update: Now available for pre-order]

It’s been four years since Apple launched the iPhone SE before it got discontinued in 2018. Now the company is bringing it back for 2020.

The original iPhone SE has the body of the iPhone 5/5S but with the internals and camera of the latest iPhone 6S/6S Plus.

Apple has done the same with the new iPhone SE (2nd Gen). The device uses the A13 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 11 series from last year.

“The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way — including our best-ever single-camera system for great photos and videos — while still being very affordable,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone SE features the industry-leading performance of A13 Bionic that enables great battery life, takes stunning Portrait mode and Smart HDR photos, shoots amazing videos with stereo audio, is great for games and super fast web surfing, and is built with the same industry-leading security features our customers expect. We can’t wait to get iPhone SE into customers’ hands.”

There’s Wi-Fi 6 support, wireless charging and also fast charging support giving you 50% battery life in just 30 minutes.

While the new iPhone SE supports fast charging, you’ll need to shell out for a faster wall adapter. The one included in the box is their 5W USB adapter, just like the one the iPhone 11 has.

For charging the iPhone SE faster, I would be the Anker USB-C to Lightning Powerline II cable (that is certified by Apple) for $27 CAD and Anker’s USB-C Wall Adapter for $25 CAD or Anker’s new PowerPort Atom PD 1 for $40 CAD.

The phone is also water and dust resistant with an IP67 rating.

The body of the new iPhone SE will be familiar because it’s using a 4.7-inch Retina HD display and looks like an iPhone 8. The display also features Apple’s TrueTone technology and support Dolby Vision and HDR10 playback.

The new iPhone SE uses aerospace-grade aluminum and durable glass design. While the new iPhones have shifted to Face ID, the new iPhone SE has a fingerprint reader for Touch ID.

The camera in the new iPhone SE is a 12MP lens that uses an image signal processor and Neural Engine for better computational photography for things like Portrait Mode.

You can record up to 4K video at up to 60fps on the iPhone SE’s camera.

The iPhone SE will come in three colours, black, white and (PRODUCT)RED. Storage options include 64, 128 and 256GB.

Pricing is as follows:

  • 64GB – $599 CAD
  • 128GB – $669 CAD
  • 256GB – $809 CAD

Pre-orders for the new iPhone SE starts at 8AM EDT/5AM PDT on Friday, April 17th. It’ll start shipping on April 24th in more than 40 countries including Canada and the US.

Update – April 17th, 2020: Apple has launched pre-orders for the new iPhone SE.

The device is available from Apple’s website and Best Buy Canada and the following carriers.
