Apple’s new iPad Pro is faster and brings trackpad support [Update: Magic Keyboard up for pre-order]

Apple has announced an update to its iPad Pro which brings faster internals and a new LiDAR Scanner.

“The new iPad Pro introduces advanced technologies never before available in mobile computing,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Combining the most advanced mobile display with powerful performance, pro cameras, pro audio, the breakthrough LiDAR Scanner and new Magic Keyboard with Trackpad, this is another huge leap forward for iPad. There’s no other device in the world like the new iPad Pro and we think our customers are going to love it.”

The new iPad Pro is powered by the A12Z Bionic chip which should make using the device even faster and powerful than ever. Apple says you should get up to 10 hours of battery life on the new iPad Pro.

The updated iPad Pro comes in two screen sizes, an 11-inch and 12.9-inch both with P3 wide colour support and 120Hz refresh rates.

The new device now has dual-cameras, one 12MP wide-angle and one 10MP ultra-wide along with a LiDAR Scanner that is used for “cutting-edge depth-sensing capabilities” for things like augmented reality (AR).

With the iPadOS 13.4 update (coming March 24th), it brings trackpad support to the iPad. There’s even a cursor on the screen, so it feels like you’re using your iPad as a computer.

“We’re making iPad even more capable and versatile by bringing trackpad support to iPadOS,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We carefully considered the best way to integrate trackpad use into a touch-first environment while retaining everything our customers know and love about iPad. We’re thrilled to bring this new way of interacting with iPad to the millions of people using iPadOS today.”

Alongside the new iPad Pro, Apple introduced the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro which has a floating design with smooth angle adjustment, backlit keyboard and trackpad.

You’ll be able to use Apple’s first-party mice and trackpads as well as third-party ones for the cursor and trackpad support in iPadOS 13.4.

The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro has a USB-C passthrough for charging and other accessories. The keyboard offers 1mm of travel, uses the same materials and has a scissor mechanism like the 16-inch MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air.

Apple has confirmed the Magic Keyboard for iPad not only works with the 2020 models but also the 2018 iPad Pros. Basically, all the iPad Pros that support the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil and have a USB-C port are compatible.
