It’s been almost 3 years since Andy Rubin and his company, Essential launched their first device. And now just a few months after announcing their latest project, Essential is shutting down.
Essential broke the news in a blog post and said that their Essential Phone (PH-1) won’t be getting any future software updates apart from the recent February security update.

The company notes that PH-1 devices will still work but no additional updates or customer support will be available.
Back in October 2019, the company revealed Project Gem, which was a new type of Android-based device.

The company hasn’t said exactly why they’re shutting down other than saying, “Despite our best efforts, we’ve now taken Gem as far as we can and regrettably have no clear path to deliver it to customers.”
Even though Essential’s Project Gem didn’t come to fruition, the company did show off these videos of the project as a parting gift.
