Miles Morales will soon be hitting the big screen again with a sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Sony Pictures officially announced via Twitter, the upcoming film’s release date.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gained critical acclaim when it released and has been regarded as one of the Spider-Man films of all time. The success of the film helped Into the Spider-Verse get the Oscar for Best Animated Picture.
The first film was directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince), Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) and Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street), and screenplay by Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman from a story by Lord.
For the sequel, Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender) is in the director’s chair with David Callaham (Zombieland: Double Tap, Wonder Women 1984, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as the film’s screenwriter.
This isn’t the only Spider-Man news in recent months, Sony is going full-steam ahead with a number of project with the webhead and universe.
Back in April, Phil Lord and Chris Miller signed a five-year deal with Sony Pictures Television to create a TV series based on Sony’s universe of Marvel characters. There’s also the possibility of an animated series based on Into the Spider-Verse.
And back in September, Sony and Disney announced the return of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a third solo film plus another MCU appearance.
There’s also a few Spider-Verse spin-off films in the works, one called Spider-Woman focusing on Spider-Gwen (from the first film), Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon/Silk. The Spider-Women spin-off film has Lauren Montgomery (Voltron: Legendary Defender, Batman: Bad Blood) as director and Bek Smith as the film’s screenwriter.
No word yet on yet if Shameik Moore will return to voice Miles Morales. But the sequel should pick up where the first one ended.
The Spider-Verse is set to hit theatres on April 8th, 2022.
