North, the company behind Focals smart glasses has announced a new way for customers to try on the wearable.

With the new Showroom app, you’ll be able to go through North’s sizing experience without needing to visit one of the company’s showrooms (in Toronto and Brooklyn, NY) or pop-up showrooms.

The app uses the iPhone X’s (or newer) TrueDepth camera to go through the sizing process for Focals.

After that, you’ll be able to choose from prescription or non-prescription Focals, select a colour and style and then after a few weeks, they’ll be shipped to you once they’re ready.

“Our Flagship and Pop-up Showrooms have been a great opportunity to engage directly with and learn from our earliest customers, but we recognize our limited footprint represents a major barrier to customers outside of those locations,” said Stephen Lake, CEO and co-founder of North. “Today’s announcement unlocks online access for Focals. With this release, we’ll bring everyday smart glasses to customers across the U.S. and Canada.”

To help make this all happen, North partnered with a San Francisco-based startup called Standard Cyborg which was able to use depth scanning for facial measurements and the virtual try-on section of the Showroom app.

The Focals Showroom app is currently available on iOS and is compatible with the iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

In terms of an Android version of the app, the company said the following: “North is planning to learn from how this iOS launch goes and then will evolve/expand the app based on those learnings.

North Focals are available now and start at $799 CAD ($599 USD) for the non-prescription lens option and $999 CAD ($799 USD) for prescription ones.
