Polestar has announced the opening of a brand new Production Centre to being work on their Polestar 1.

The new Polestar Production Centre is located in Chengdu, China and will produce vehicles for both the Chinese and global markets.

The new facility is set to be one of the most environmentally responsible car factories in the country. Polestar is aiming to achieve a Gold LEED rating for the centre.

Around 500 Polestar 1 cars are set to be built per year at the new Chengdu facility and a total of 1,500 over the next three years.

The company’s all-electric vehicle, the Polestar 2 is set to begin production at the centre in Luqiao, China in early 2020.

Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar, said in a statement: “Here in Chengdu we are not only manufacturing a premium hybrid-electric performance car. We have also created an inspirational manufacturing environment, a great place to work and visit. It truly reflects the Polestar brand. We promised we would have our first production facility built in 2019, we promised cars would be delivered to customers this year, and we promised we would do things differently – once again we are delivering on our promises. This is a hugely proud moment for the whole team at Polestar.”

The Polestar 1 offers 600 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque thanks to the high-performance gasoline in-line four-cylinder engine and is both supercharged and turbocharged.

The engine in the Polestar 1 is combined with a 34 kWh battery that offers an electric range of 150 km (93 miles). The Polestar 1 starts at an eye-watering price of $195,000 CAD ($160,000 USD).

Meanwhile the company’s all-electric Polestar 2 will cost $69,900 CAD ($63,000 USD) for the Launch Edition and $45,000 USD (Canadian price TBC) for the standard version starting price.

You can reserve your Polestar 1 or Polestar 2 on the company’s website.
