In an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Taika Waititi will be writing and directing Thor 4 for Marvel.
Waititi previously worked 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok which made the character more likeable and resonates more with audiences. This new Thor would continue in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
That helped Ragnarok gross more than $854 million at the global box office.
With this announcement, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Akira that Waititi was on board to write and direct for.
Akira was set to be released on May 21st, 2021 and Waititi was currently looking around the world for an unknown actor for the lead role in the film.
Development on Akira is currently on hold because Warner Bros. does want to keep Waititi involved and may return to work on Akira after Thor: Love and Thunder.
Marvel will be holding a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, where we should find more about Marvel’s upcoming slate of movies following, Spider-Man: far From Home.
Update – July 21st, 2019: Marvel has announced that Thor 4 will be called Thor: Love and Thunder. This article has been updated to reflect that.
