One of the surprise announcements of CES 2019 was that Apple and Samsung would be working together to bring an iTunes Movies & TV Shows app (now the Apple TV app) to Samsung Smart TVs and now it’s rolling out via a firmware update.
The new Apple TV app for Samsung’s 2019 Smart TVs and select 2018 TVs allows you to watch content from your iTunes movies and TV show library or rent from more than 100,000 titles, all in 4K HDR.
With the firmware update, you also get AirPlay 2, which will allow you to play videos and other content from your iPhone, iPad or Mac on your Samsung Smart TV.
“For the last decade, Samsung has been at the forefront of offering the broadest selection of content available to consumers on our Smart TV platform,” said Won-Jin Lee, Executive Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As the first TV manufacturer to integrate the Apple TV app on a Smart TV platform, Samsung continues to offer our customers incredible value and access to the Apple TV app experience on the largest screens available today.”
You can also watch content via Apple TV Channels, which allows users to view content from streaming services such as Prime Video, Crave and if you’re in the US, HBO, Showtime, Starz without needing an additional app.
The Apple TV app on Samsung Smart TVs also works with Samsung’s Universal Guide, Bixby and Search.
And later this year, you’ll be able to watch original content from Apple’s TV+ service this fall.
While the Apple TV app is launching on Samsung Smart TVs first, the app will be available on Roku devices, Amazon Fire TV, LG, Sony and Vizio TVs later this year.
