If you want smooth video from your smartphone, then you’ll want something like a stabilizer. There are a few to choose from including the FlowMotion One.
I’ve been following FlowMotion since 2016 when they first launched their Kickstarter. But after a couple of manufacturing delays, I’ve been able to get my hands on their FlowMotion One stabilizer and test it out for a few weeks.
Design & Hardware
The stabilizer is made from high-quality materials that make it worth the price. It is on the heavier side, even without putting your phone in it, which may be an issue for some when using it for long periods of time.
The FlowMotion One is compatible with a number of phones including all the latest iPhones, Galaxy S, Huawei, Google Pixel and more. As long as your phone is between 2.16 and 3.3-inches in width, it’ll work.
At the top is where the main phone holder is, it is sturdy enough to hold most phones (without a case), without the fear of it falling out. Just behind where your phone attaches, is where you’ll find the replaceable battery is located. Below that is the power button, indicator lights and the joystick which is really easy to use and responsive.
Below the joystick is where you’ll find the photo and video buttons to use when using the FlowMotion app. The bottom of FlowMotion One is where you’ll find the USB-C port to charge the device.
The battery on the FlowMotion One is 800 mAh and lasts about 7 hours which was true in my testing. The stabilizer also comes with a nice travel case that makes it easier to carry around.
The main reason that you would want a stabilizer is to not have shaky videos and with the FlowMotion One, the company has done just that.
The FlowMotion One is available now from FlowMotion’s website for $249 USD.
The FlowMotion One app is one of the downsides to the device. Technically you don’t need to use the app but if you want to use features like auto follow technology or check the battery life, you’ll need to connect your phone to the app.
The app is available on Android and iOS but I was only able to test the Android version of the app.
The companion app has a number of modes from photo and video to stuff like time-lapse and slow-motion.
I did notice a couple of bugs with the app, where even though my phone can record 1080p video at 60 fps, the FlowMotion app only gave me the option for up to 30 fps. But these bugs will eventually be fixed and you don’t need to use the app to use the stabilizer, you can use the default camera app instead.
Overall, the FlowMotion One is a great stabilizer that has all the features you want but in a premium package.
- Easy to use
- Great battery life
- Fits almost all phones (without a case)
- Heavy to hold for long periods of time
- FlowMotion Android app has some bugs
