Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first trailer for Detective Pikachu.

According to Warner Bros., the film is about:

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

The film’s cast includes Ryan Reynolds voicing Detective Pikachu, Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Tim Goodman, Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird, Big Little Lies) as Lucy, a junior reporter on the hunt for her first big story, Ken Watanabe (Godzilla, The Last Samurai) as Lt. Yoshida.

Detective Pikachu is directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Monsters Vs. Aliens) with a script by Letterman and Nicole Pearlman. Some of the crew includes two-time Oscar-nominated director of photography John Mathieson (The Phantom of the Opera, Gladiator), production designer Nigel Phelps (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Lies) and Oscar-winning editor Mark Sanger (Gravity).

Warner Bros. says the film will “showcase a wide array of beloved Pokémon characters, each with its own unique abilities and personality.” It also marks the first-ever live-action Pokémon movie to be made.

Visual effects for Detective Pikachu are being done by Moving Picture Company (Wonder Woman) and Framestore (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).

Warner Bros. will handle distribution for the film outside of Japan and China. While Toho Company Ltd. will handle Japanese distribution and Legendary East for China.

Warner Bros. also released the first poster for the film.

Detective Pikachu will release on May 10th, 2019.
