Back in February, Amazon announced that they would be acquiring video doorbell maker, Ring for around $1 billion USD. Now that acquisition is complete, they’ve dropped the price of their first-gen video doorbell to just $124.99 CAD ($99 USD).
Amazon and Ring both said that this acquisition will help with Ring’s mission to help reduce crime in neighbourhoods by offering affordable and effective smart home security products and services.
“Our mission to reduce crime in neighborhoods has been at the core of everything we do at Ring,” said Jamie Siminoff, CEO and Chief Inventor of Ring. “Together with Amazon, we will accelerate our mission dramatically by connecting more neighbors globally and making our security devices and systems more affordable and accessible. The entire Ring team is excited to continue working hard to create products and services that bring real benefits to people’s lives and build safer communities for all our neighbors.”
Prior to the acquisition, Amazon had invested in Ring via their Alexa fund, which helps company’s build skills and products that work with their Alexa platform.
“Ring’s talented team has invented home security products and services that customers love. We’re excited about their work, their products and their mission, and look forward to teaming together to keep delighting customers,” said Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices and Services. “And this is just the beginning—we will continue to move quickly and work hard to empower customers with a suite of security solutions that provide an affordable, effective way to secure homes and neighborhoods.”
Ring’s product lineup is just one of three home security products, camera and solutions that are now under the Amazon umbrella including the Blink XT Indoor/Outdoor Camera, Blink Indoor Security Camera, Blink accessories and Amazon’s own Cloud Cam.
Amazon says that Ring, Blink will continue to operate as normal and customers won’t experience any interruption in service.
The new price is permanent and all of Ring’s products are compatible with Amazon Alexa.
