Google and Lenovo announced the first details of their upcoming Daydream standalone headset, the Mirage Solo as well as a VR180 camera.
Lenovo Mirage Solo
The Lenovo Mirage Solo is the first Daydream standalone headset. Meaning that you won’t need a phone to powered it, like the Google’s Daydream View headset.
All the power you’ll need is built into the headset, the Mirage Solo brings the portability and easy of use of smartphone-based VR and makes it more immersive. The headset has Google’s WorldSense tracking technology, so it can positional track you without the need of additional sensors.
The headset weighs 645g (1.42 lbs) and has a 5.5-inch QHD display, it’s being powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB of RAM. There is also 64GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, as well as a 4,000 mAh battery and it charges over USB Type-C.
The Mirage Solo has dual 6 DOF (Degrees-Of-Freedom) and a tracking camera. The controller has 3 DOF and looks similar to the one that comes with the Daydream View. The device comes in one colour option, Moonlight White.
The headset is running Google’s Daydream platform, so you’ll have access to the company’s catalog of more than 250 apps and games, including ones by Google. In addition, Google is working with developers to bring new experiences to Daydream including a new game based in the Blade Runner universe called Blade Runner: Revelations.
The Mirage Solo headset should be available in Q2 of this year for under $400 USD.
Last year, Google announced a new format for recording VR videos, called VR180, it adds depth to video, compared to traditional 360 videos.
Lenovo announced their own VR180 camera, called the Mirage Camera. You’ll be able to record 4K video in VR180 with the Mirage Camera. The device easily integrates with YouTube and Google Photos for easy sharing. The VR180 format is also viewable as a standard 2D or stereoscopic 3D video.
The camera’s has dual 13-megapixel sensors with a f/2.1 apeture, it can record 4K, 1440p and 1080p at 30fps. You’ll be able to use the Mirage Camera with Android devices (via the companion app) with 6.0 and later and iOS 7 and later. The Mirage Camera has the ability to livestream, which can be viewed through Daydream.
The camera is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor with 2GB of RAM, has 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot and a 2,200 mAh battery. You can expect up to 2 hours of general usage and it charges over USB Type-C.
The Mirage Camera isn’t the only VR180 camera coming this year, there will also be one from YI Technology with their YI Horizon VR180 camera. The Lenovo Mirage Camera and the YI Horizon will launch in spring, there will also be a LG VR180 camera coming later this year.
