October 4th was a busy day, while everyone was paying attention to Google’s announcements, Sonos had some of their own. Sonos has unveiled the Sonos One, which is the company’s first voice-controlled smart speaker.
The Sonos One has support for multiple voice services, it will first launch with Amazon Alexa to control your music, smart home and more. Music services such as Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora, SiriusXM and TuneIn can be controlled via Alexa on the Sonos One.
Alexa voice control for Spotify will come soon after launch. In 2018, the Sonos One will also get support for Google Assistant but since Sonos partnered with Amazon, the device will be launching with Alexa first.
“We live in a golden age of streaming entertainment,” said Sonos CEO Patrick Spence. “But so much of this great content is being pushed through smart speakers that aren’t designed with sound quality in mind. With our open approach to collaboration, agnostic approach to voice services, the strength of our many innovative partners, and a sound platform designed for the whole home, we’re helping people listen more and listen better.”
The Sonos One is designed to be included in your Sonos sound system, so it will easily connect to your other Sonos speakers. The Sonos can be used as a standalone speaker, two can be paired together for stereo sound or add a Playbase or Playbar and create a home theatre sound system.
Inside, the Sonos One has two Class-D digital amplifiers, one tweeter and one mid-woofer. There’s a six-mic array with an adaptive noise suppression algorithm to help detect whose talking to the speaker. On the top of the device is a light, and works in similar fashion to the Amazon Echo’s.
The Sonos has support for Trueplay, which will help you easily tune the speaker no matter where it’s placed in your home.
Apple AirPlay 2 support will be coming to the Sonos One in 2018. The Sonos One will be launching in the US, UK and Germany (all the countries that Echo is available) on October 24th for $199 USD.
The Sonos One is not the only thing that the company announced. They also announced an open beta to allow you to connect your Amazon Echo or Echo Dot to your Sonos speaker system. This will come in the form of an update the works with existing Sonos speakers.
