Netflix has announced the first (of possibly many) shows with interactive elements. Viewers are able to decide what happens in the show they’re watching.
Netflix is debuting these new interactive elements to a few new children series, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, which is available now and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile, which will debut on July 14th. The third series with the new “branching narratives”, called Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout will arrive in 2018.
Netflix has teamed up with DreamWorks Animation Television, American Greetings Entertainment, and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios to help make the new series with their branching narratives.
The company also says that they’ve done extensive research and have collected a lot of data by talking to parent and kids to help them better understand if people will be interested in this sort of thing.
Netflix says that Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, has 13 breaks to offer viewers a choice and there are two different endings. Your adventure in Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale can be as long as 39 minutes or as little as 18 minutes, depending on what choices you make.
The interactive branching narrative episodes will be playable on most TV experiences and iOS devices. Android devices, Netflix.com, Chromecast, Apple TV do not support interactive content at this time.
If this new way of storytelling is proven successful, Netflix could bring it to their other shows.
