OnePlus has officially unveiled their latest flagship smartphone with the OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 5 is being powered the Snapdragon 835 processor (clocked at up to 2.45GHz) with either 6 or 8GB of RAM. It has a 5.5-inch 1080p display (with a 16:9 aspect ratio) and while 1080p may help with battery life, it would have been nice to have a high-res screen.

The OnePlus 5 has a smooth, rounded design that is also slimmer than previous models. One feature that OnePlus didn’t add was waterproofing.

Below the screen is the fingerprint sensor which OnePlus only takes about 0.2s to unlock the device. The battery is 3,300 mAh with OnePlus’ Dash Charge which charges your device within half an hour. And yes, OnePlus has kept the 3.5mm headphone jack on the OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 5 also has support for 34 network bands, so you’ll be able to easily use your phone around the globe. In Canada, the phone is compatible with Rogers, Fido, Bell, Virgin Mobile, Telus, Koodo, Videotron and Freedom Mobile (including their Band 66 LTE).

The OnePlus 5 supports the following frequencies:

  • FDD LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30 and 66
  • TDD LTE: 38, 39, 40 and 41
  • TD-SCDMA: 34 and 39
  • UMTS: 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8
  • CDMA: BC0

OnePlus has also improved the vibration motor in the device and the alert slider is back again.

In terms of storage, the OnePlus will be available with 64 or 128GB of internal storage with no microSD card slot. The OnePlus 5 also has Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC.

OnePlus has really put a strong emphasis on the OnePlus 5’s camera. The device comes with a dual-lens system with a 20-megapixel telephoto sensor (with an aperture of F2.6) and a 16-megapixel Sony sensor (with an aperture of F1.7).

OnePlus created a Smart Capture system for their camera to help improved clarity in photos taken on the OnePlus 5. The system will be able to de-noise low-light photos. Since the OnePlus has a telephoto lens in addition to the regular sensor, you’ll be able to take better zoomed in photos than with a phone that digitally zooms.

The dual-lens camera system also helps improve HDR photos and OnePlus’ Smart Capture to help keep things clear and remove some shadows. OnePlus says the OnePlus 5’s camera system can automatically recognize the type of photo that you’re taking and instantly set the ideal exposure, white balance and focus.

There’s also a Portrait Mode to produce a Bokeh effect with your photos, Low-Light Mode and Pro Mode where you adjust everything from the ISO to the White Balance, Shutter Speed and Manual Focus.

You’ll also be able to shoot in RAW and you adjust your photos later on. The OnePlus 5 is running the company’s latest version of Oxygen OS which is based on Android 7.1.

OnePlus has added a few new features to Oxygen OS, such as a new Reading Mode which will help when reading longer pieces of text on the OnePlus 5. This new mode works in tandem with the phone’s ambient sensor which can detect the light in the room you’re in. So it can make your screen anywhere from greyscale to a more warmer tint.

The Reading Mode can easily be toggled off and on and can automatically turn on in certain apps. The other new feature is expanded screenshots will let you take a bigger screenshot. OnePlus has made refinements to Oxygen OS including a new design language.

There is also a new Night Mode which will automatically turn on at the correct time of day.
