Ubisoft has updated their “swirl” logo after 14 years, since first introducing it in 2003.
Before 2003, Ubisoft was known as Ubi Soft and here’s a timeline of the logos that Ubisoft has had.
According to the UbiBlog, when Ubisoft began in 1986, they were just a local distributor of games and their logo was “inspired by the distinct visual style of the ’80s.”
Then in 1995, when the company first introduced Rayman, they also introduced the rainbow logo. This marked their shift from just being a distributor to a game creator, it also highlighted that Ubisoft was making family-oriented content.
In 2003, is where Ubisoft introduced their swirl design, it also marked another shift to making more mature and diversified games. At the same time, Ubisoft just acquired Red Storm Entertainment and had started creating new Tom Clancy games.
Now onto today and the change to a redesigned swirl logo and new typeface. Ubisoft says “Today, we create worlds – worlds that live as video games, comics, movies, TV shows, books, and amusement park rides.” Their new logo is minimal, modern and also monochromatic.
“It’s a window into our worlds, giving a preview of what’s to come by highlighting the artistry that goes into creating them,” Ubisoft says, “The swirl and the letter O are both deliberately created to be reminiscent of hand-drawn shapes and represent our human qualities of enthusiasm, curiosity and the grain de folie that Ubisoft is known for”.
The company also said, “With this new look, we proudly embrace our role as a creator of worlds and invite you, the players, to continue playing, engaging, and growing with us. As we move towards our most exciting time of the year (E3!), you will see this new emblem take on the colors and textures of our worlds, and we can’t wait to hear what you all think”.
Personally, their reasoning behind the new logo, makes me like the new swirl even more. Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference is on June 12th at 4PM ET (1PM PT/9PM BST.
