Netflix may not have a ton of TV shows and movies coming to the Canadian version of their service but they’re still worth mentioning.

June 1st & 2nd

On June 1st, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, based on the book of the same name, comes to Netflix. Also coming on the 1st, is The Birth of a Nation, which is a period drama film based on the story of Nat Turner, an enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia in 1931. The film is co-written, co-produced and stars, Nate Parker who also is the director of the film (in his directorial debut).

June 2nd sees the release of the second season of Flaked, a Netflix original series, which stars Will Arnett who plays Chip, a celebrated long-time resident of the insular world of Venice, California who falls for the object of his best friend’s fascination. Soon the tangled web of half-truths and semi-bullshit that underpins his all-important image and sobriety begins to unravel.

Season 2 of Chelsea Handler’s ‘Chelsea’ starts airing every friday in June.

June 4th to 10th

June 4th sees the release of season 3 of Turn: Washington’s Spies, which is a drama based on the book by Alexander Rose.

On the 7th, Edge of Seventeen, starring Hailee Steinfeld is released, the movie is about growing up and the challenges that come with it. Steinfeld plays Nadine who is making her way through high school and is at peak awkwardness and find out that her older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) is dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson).

Also on the 7th, episodes from season 3 of iZombie will air on a weekly basis.

The 9th of June, see the release of the much anticipated fifth season of the Netflix Original, Orange is the New Black, which has Taylor Schilling starring as Piper. The trailer for season 5 does have spoilers.

Also on the 9th, we see the release of another Netflix Original, Shimmer Lake, which stars Rainn Wilson and follows a local sheriff hunting three bank robbery suspects, one of whom is his brother. The film is written and directed by Oren Uziel, who previously wrote 22 Jump Street. 

June 11th to 17th

Vacation (2015), a reboot to the original National Lampoon Vacation film series, will be coming to Netflix Canada on the 13th, along with Oh, Hello on Broadway, which is a off-broadway comedy show, created and starring Nick Kroll and John Mulaney.

The 14th sees the release of the first season of Animal Kingdom, which is about a 17-year-old Joshua “J” Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose.

On June 16th, the second season of the Netflix Original series, The Ranch, starring Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson.

June 18th – 24th

On the 20th, sees the release of Disney’s Moana, which is about, An adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.

On June 22nd, we see the release of 20th Century Women, which is about the story of a teenage boy, his mother, and two other women who help raise him among the love and freedom of Southern California of 1979.

While on the 23rd, we see the first season of the Netflix Original series, GLOW, which stars Alison Brie as Ruth Wilder who is a struggling actress that receives an invitation to audition along with 12 other women in a fledgling professional wrestling promotion called the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW).

June 25th to 30th

Netflix will release Chris D’Elia – Man on Fire, on June 27th as part of their ongoing releases of stand-up comedy specials this year.

On the 28th, the Netflix Original, Okja, is released and is about a girl named Mija as she does everything she can to protect her mystical creature named Okja.

On June 30th, Netflix will release the second season of Between, which is a sci-fi drama about a mysterious disease that kills everyone over the age of 22 in the town of Pretty Lake.
