Microsoft will be holding an event in Shanghai on May 23rd and they’re expected to reveal a refresh to the Surface Pro 4, according to leaked images obtained by famed leaker, Evan Blass (@evleaks) in his post on Venture Beat.
Microsoft’s VP of Surface, Panos Panay recently said that “there’s not such thing as a Surface Pro 5,” and theses leaked images show us, what Panay may have been referring to.
It seems that Microsoft isn’t redesigning the Surface Pro line, but instead giving it a much needed spec bump and dropping the number, to simply be referred to as Surface Pro. Microsoft may be going to a similar naming approach that Apple does with their laptops by calling refreshed models by when they were released, i.e. Macbook Pro with Retina Display (Early 2015) etc.
The new Surface Pro still retains a USB Type-A port, Mini DisplayPort, SD card, Surface charging port headphone jack and no USB Type-C port. You can expect the new Surface Pro to come with the latest Intel Core i processor and similar storage and RAM options to the outgoing Surface Pro 4.
Update – May 22nd 2017: Panos Panay has teased some of the new Type Covers for the Surface Pro on his Instagram. They’re rumored to be made from alcantara, the same material that Microsoft is using for the keyboard on the Surface Laptop and similar new colours as mentioned earlier. We’ll find out more about the Microsoft Event in Shanghai tomorrow.
