Samsung has taken the wraps of their latest entry in their Note line with the Galaxy Note7. Samsung also announced an updated Gear VR headset and a release date and price for their Gear 360 Camera which was announced at MWC 2016.

Update – October 11th 2016: Samsung has officially killed off the Note7 due to faulty and dangerous battery concerns. See this article for more: The Samsung Galaxy Note7 is officially dead. Samsung Note7

Update (8/10/2016): Samsung Canada has confirmed that the Canadian version of the Note 7 will have the same Snapdragon 820 processor as the US variant, instead of the Samsung Exynos as previously reported. This post has been updated to reflect that.

Samsung has decided to not call this year’s Note entry, the Galaxy Note 6, instead they are calling it the Galaxy Note7 to go along with the naming structure of the Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge.

On the outside, it still looks like a Note but the design is more refined that last year’s Note 5. The body is more curved which makes it more comfortable to hold in the hands.

07

The screen is a 5.7-inch Quad HD Dual edge Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 to give it 518 ppi. The Note7 is also the first smartphone with Gorilla Glass 5.

New for the Note line is that addition of water and dust proofing with an IP68 rating which means the Note7 can be submerged underwater for up to 5 ft for up to 30 minutes. The S-Pen on the Note7 is also water-resistant and you won’t be able to put it in backwards like some users were able to with the Note 5.

05

Also new for the Note line is a the addition of a USB Type-C port instead of micro-USB. Each Note7 will also come with a free USB Type-C to MicroUSB adapter in the box.

The rear-facing camera is 12-megapixels (just like in the S7) with OIS and can shoot 4K video. On the front by the 5-megapixel front-facing camera is a iris scanner and a fingerprint sensor. The iris can be used like a fingerprint sensor for authentication on purchases made using Samsung Pay.

06

The US/Canadian versions of the Note7 will have the Snapdragon 820 processor while the International variant will have a Octa-core Exynos processor. All variants will have 4GB of RAM.

The Galaxy Note7 will come standard with 64GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for up 256GB (which exists now).

09

The Note7 also has a 3,500 mAh battery which is larger that last year’s Note 5 but is smaller than 3,600 mAh battery found in the S7 Edge. But the battery in the Note7 should easily last all day thanks for the improvements made in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow (and the Note7 will be upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat). The Note7 also has wireless charging support (Qi and PowerMat) as well as fast charging support.

The Note7 will be available in four colours, Blue Coral, Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium and Black Onyx. It will be available in Canada on August 19th on major carriers, retailers and Samsung Experience Stores. The Note7 will cost $1049.99 off-contract and $549.99 on a 2-year contract.

Revised Gear VR

Samsung also announced an upgraded Gear VR to go along with the upcoming Note7. The newly revised headset has interchangeable plugs, so you can choose between a USB Type-C or microUSB connector, depending on what Galaxy phone you have.

The headset itself also has a USB Type-C port for pass through charging and other data. There’s also a new colour scheme for the new Gear VR with it having a dark blue and black shell instead of the old white design.

13

The touchpad on the new Gear VR is easier to control and smoother to navigate and there’s now a dedicated home button. The lenses on the new Gear VR have a 101-degree field-of-view as compared to a 96-degree FOV in the previous model.

The new Gear VR will launch alongside the Note7 on August 19th in Canada. Pricing wasn’t announced but expect it to be around $129 CAD (which is about $99 USD).
