CES 2016 Day Zero: Everything you need to know

CES 2016 doesn’t officially begin until January 6th but today (January 5th) is known as press day or “Day Zero” (because its the day before Day One of the show.



Previously, HTC and Under Armour announced the Grip which was fitness tracker that never made it to market. HTC scrapped that product to work on “something better”.

Both companies have partnered once again to produce HealthBox, which is a three-part product that can help you monitor your health and fitness. The three products, the UA Scale, UA Band and UA Heart Rate are covered in Under Armour branding but the hardware is made by HTC.

The UA Scale measures your weight and your BMI, it also has Wi-Fi built-in so it can connect to your smartphone app, it also supports up to eight users.

The UA Heart Rate is supposed to be worn around your chest during workouts.

All three devices in the HealthBox are handled through the UA Record app which is already available now.

The HealthBox will go on sale on January 22nd for $400 USD and you can pre-order it from HTC or Under Armour’s website.

Besides HTC’s partnership with Under Armour, they also announced a redesigned second-generation Vive developer edition called the Vive Pre. The Vive has been redesigned completely to improve comfort, ergonomics and performance. The Vive Pre also brings updated controllers and a new front-facing camera on the headset so it can better track you in a 3D space.

HTC also said that they will be making an additional 7,000 Vive Pre units available to developers before the launch of the consumer version of the Vive in April. HTC say they have 15 partners that will be working on Vive applications including the like of Audi who will be using the Vive as a VR retail experience.

Huawei had a few new products to show off this year at CES. From some new smartphones and a new version of their Huawei Watch to a new tablet.

First up is the Huawei Mate 8, it has a 6-inch 1080p display, runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has a 4,000mAh battery. The processor is a 2.3 GHz Octa-core Kirin 950. You can either get 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, it also has a microSD card slot with support for up to 128GB. The 32GB model has 3GB of RAM while the 64GB model has 4GB of RAM. The rear-facing camera is 16-megapixels and the front-facing camera is 8-megapixels. There is also a fingerprint sensor just like the Nexus 6P.

However, Huawei has said that there aren’t any current plans to bring the Mate 8 to the U.S. The pricing that was announced was for Europe, the 32GB model will cost €599 while the 64GB model will cost €699.

Huawei has also announced a new mid-range device that will be coming to the U.S. The GX8 was announced previously but when it was announced, it only launched in a few European countries.

The GX8 has a 5.5-inch 1080p display, runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, has 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for up to 128GB more. It has 2GB of RAM and the processor is the Snapdragon 615. The rear-facing camera is 13-megapixels and the front is 5-megapixels. The GX8 will also have a fingerprint sensor on the back just like the Mate 8. It will launch in the U.S. in the coming months for $349 USD.


Huawei Elegant Watch

Huawei has also introduced two new version of their Huawei Watch called the Jewel and the Elegant. These new models have the same 1.4″ circular AMOLED screen as the regular Huawei Watch but they have a more feminine look to them. The Elegant version has a dotted/square pattern that almost looks like women version of the Moto 360 2015. Meanwhile the Jewel has encrusted diamonds in the bezel.


Both versions are rose gold and both come with a leather strap. The Jewel and Elegant are slightly larger than the regular Huawei Watch, the face is 44x44mm instead of 42x42mm. The specs are the same as the regular Huawei Watch with a Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, 300mAh battery and all of the same sensors. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet but these two will be available in the coming months.



Besides smartphones and new smartwatches, Huawei also announced a new tablet called the Huawei MediaPad M2 10.0. Some people have already pointed out that it looks like if Apple and Samsung worked on a device together and that’s what it would look like.

The screen is 10-inches with a resolution of 1920×1200. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Huawei’s EMUI 3.1. It is being powered by a 2 GHz Kirin 930 Octa-core processor. The rear-facing camera is 13-megapixels and the front is 5-megapixels. There is also a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button.

You can either get it with 16GB of internal storage with 2GB of RAM or 64GB of internal storage and 3GB of RAM. Both models will have a microSD card slot for up to 128GB. Both models have support for Huawei’s Active Stylus but the 64GB model has it included.

The Huawei MediaPad M2 10.0 starts at $349 USD for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model and goes up to $469 USD for the 64GB model with Wi-Fi & LTE.



Samsung has introduced a new smart fridge that has 3 embedded cameras that can keep an eye on what’s in the fridge and that way it can monitor what food is going bad and what needs to be replenished. 

You’ll be able to access the camera through remote apps or the touchscreen that is built-in to the front of the fridge itself. The main feature of the fridge is the shopping that was made by MasterCard.

The app will allow you to buy groceries from home. At launch, you will be able to order from FreshDirect and ShopRite but MasterCard says that more stores will be added over the course of this year. 

The screen part of the fridge is being powered by Samsung’s Tizen OS and the fridge also has a built-in speaker so you can play music while in your kitchen. It also has bluetooth so you could connect the fridge to other speakers in your house. The screen can also show you what is playing on your Samsung Smart TV.

Samsung’s smartfridge will be available in the U.S in May but no pricing has been announced yet (but it will be expensive at launch because it’s the first of it’s kind).



Samsung has also introduced their first 4K Blu-ray player and it’s available for preorder today. Samsung UBD-K8500 will also upscale your existing Blu-rays and DVDs but it won’t be as good as a proper 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. The player will start to ship in March and no pricing was announced yet.



Samsung is also getting back into the Windows tablet game with the Galaxy TabPro S which is Windows 10 tablet that looks a lot like Samsung’s Android tablets. The TabPro S has a detachable keyboard and stylus input. It is also thinner and lighter than Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4. The new tablet only has the one USB-C port for connectivity.

The TabPro S doesn’t have that many ports to begin with but Samsung has a solution in the form of an optional port hub that has HDMI, regular USB ports and USB-C ports.

The screen on the tablet is 12-inches with a resolution of 2160×1440. The TabPro S also gets about 10.5 hours of battery life. The rest of the specs are as follows: Intel Core M processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The tablet will also come in Wi-Fi and LTE versions. No pricing has been announced but it will launch in February.


Samsung Notebook 9

Besides a new Windows tablet, Samsung has also announced new laptops called the Notebook 9 series. There will be to sizes, one with a 13.3-inch screen and the other with a 15-inch screen. The 13.3-inch model weighs 0.84kg (1.85lbs) while the 15-inch models weighs 1.29kg (2.84lbs).

You can get the 13-inch model and 15-inch with a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM and either a 128GB or 256GB SSD.  The 15-inch model also includes a USB-C port and fast-charging capabilities.

Samsung has not announced the pricing or availability of these laptops.



Samsung has also introduced a new lineup of SUHD TVs at CES 2016. All of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs will have Quantum dot displays, the world’s first bezel-less curved design and a new smart hub. Samsung’s new TV lineup will be using their Tizen OS to power the smart features.


Samsung’s SUHD TVs will some with a new Smart Control remote that will “eliminate the need to juggle multiple remotes”, the new remote will automatically recognize the type of device you want control, whether it’s a set-top box, a game console or a home theatre system that is connected to the TV. Samsung’s Smart TV will have access to PlayStation Now so you can play all your favourite PlayStation games.

All of Samsung’s SUHD TVs will have IoT hub technology built-in. That means your TV will be a hub for all of your smart home devices. You will be able to control your home from your TV. Any device that is compatible with SmartThings will be able to connect to these SUHD TVs. For you Samsung SUHD TV is fully work with SmartThings compatible devices, you will need a SmartThings Extend USB adapter.




LG has introduced a new 8K display but it’s 98-inches in size. It even has moving speakers that can provide an “impactful” visual and audio experience. LG hasn’t announced the price for their UH9800 but just to get an idea, Sharp sells a 85-inch 8K display for $133,000 USD.


LG has also introduced a  new laptop called the Gram 15. It has a 15-inch 1080p display, is 0.6 inches thick and weighs 2.16 inches. The laptop runs Windows 10, has a USB-C port, HDMI, USB 3.0, microUSB and microSD slots. You can either get a 6th-generation Core i5 or i7 and the battery life is about 7 hours.


LG hasn’t announced how much the Gram 15 will cost or when it will be available.




LG has also introduced a new fridge called the LG Signature fridge. The two main features include the door itself in which you can use LG’s Knock-On feature that will allow you to simply knock on the door of the fridge and the lights inside will light up to show you what’s in your fridge.

The second major feature is the Auto Door feature which is exactly as it sounds. The fridge door will automatically open for you it when detects your foot nearby and it will then gently open it. The fridge is smart enough to tell when it’s you and not your pet or a crawling baby.



Nikon introduced two new cameras at CES this year. The first is the D500 which is a part of Nikon’s DX Series of cameras. It has a auto-focus camera, a Expeed 5 processor and is more user user-friendly.  The D500 also has a 20.9-megapixel sensor and the capability to capture 4K video at 30fps.


Nikon’s D500 will also be their first camera to feature their new SnapBridge image sharing technology. The technology utilizes a Bluetooth Low Energy connection to connect to devices and SnapBridge can let you share images to your smartphone wirelessly.



The D500 will cost $1,999.95 USD for just the body when it launches in March, Nikon will also sell it in a kit with a 16-80mm f/2.8-4EED VR lens for $3,069.65 USD.

Nikon also introduced their very first action camera called the KeyMission 360. It can shoot 360-degree video in 4K. The camera will the first of many action cameras coming from Nikon but will be the only one that shoots 360 video.

The KeyMission 360 has a square design and has lens on the front and back. It is shockproof to 2 metres (6ft) and waterproof to 30 metres (100 ft). The camera also has electronic vibration reduction. Nikon has revealed any details about pricing or availability but it should be competitively prices with GoPro.

Dish has unveiled their Hopper 3 DVR. It has 16 tuners inside you can set multiple DVR recordings at once or even watch live shows in more rooms throughout your home.

Another cool feature of the Hopper 3 is the “Sports Bar Mode” which splits your TV into 4 sections each with its own 1080p video feed. You’ll be able to choose which one you want audio from. It’s great for keeping multiple channels on at once. To really take advantage of the “Sport Bar Mode”, you’ll need a 4K TV.

Dish has also partnered with Sony to expand the number of TV shows and movies that customers can rent on the Hopper 3 (or the 4K Joey). If you find it on Sony’s Video Unlimited store in 4K, you’ll be able to watch it from Dish.

The Hopper 3 is about seven times faster than past models. It uses a Broadcom chip and it is also the first DVR to use USB 3.0 for external storage of content.

There was also a new HopperGo device that was also announced. You plug it into your DVR and you can load up to 100 hours of your recorded content on to it and then unplug it to take it with you. The HopperGo creates a private Wi-Fi connection that can be accessed by five devices at the same time. It will be available for a one-time fee of $99 and there is no monthly cost to use it. Meanwhile the Hopper 3 will be released in the coming months.

Dish’s Sling TV was first introduced at CES 2015 and it gave people the chance to cancel their cable subscriptions. Since its launch, there are a lot more channels on the service including HBO. One of the things that its users complained was the user interface, it was slow and not very intuitive.

Thankfully, Sling TV is getting a complete overhaul design-wise. You’ll be able to choose your favourite channels and see only those channel when looking through the guide.

The new Sling TV UI will be rolling out in stages across all of its compatible devices but no timeframe was given. Sling TV is available on Android, iOS, Xbox One, Roku, Amazon TV, Chromecast and PC & Mac. However, Sling TV is U.S only.
